**Tip! – Bottled water is much more expensive, per gallon, than tap water. You pay for the convenience of the container. In addition to cost, tap water also has an important advantage – most tap water has fluoride, which is good for your children’s teeth. Many public water systems add fluoride; most bottlers do not. Water is a healthier choice than sugar-sweetened beverages. Adding flavor to water encourages your family to reduce the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. You can keep bottled water indefinitely if stored in unopened, properly sealed containers. However, long-term storage of bottled water may result in in odor and taste changes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulates bottled water and the materials used to produce plastic containers. Substances used in plastic containers must be approved by the FDA.
